About the By-Election
๐ Why is this by-election being held?
The Stafford electorate's seat in the Queensland Legislative Assembly became vacant following the death of Jimmy Sullivan MP on 9 April 2026. Under Queensland electoral law, a by-election must be held to elect a replacement Member.
๐ณ๏ธ How to Vote
Queensland uses optional preferential voting for state elections. When you receive your ballot paper:
- Mark "1" in the box next to your first choice candidate.
- You may then continue numbering other candidates in order of preference (2, 3, 4โฆ). This is optional.
- Do not use ticks, crosses, or write any other marks.
- Your ballot paper is secret โ no one will know how you voted.

Early Voting
Early voting is available from Tuesday 6 May to Friday 15 May 2026 (weekdays only), 8am to 6pm at designated early voting centres.
Election Day
Polling booths will be open across the Stafford electorate on Saturday, 16 May 2026 from 8:00am to 6:00pm.

Anyone can apply for a postal vote โ you do not need to provide a reason. Applications must be received by 6:00pm on Friday, 15 May 2026.
